Ginger & Lemon Tea: a digestive delight!

An easy way to positively impact your digestive health.

If you're looking for a natural way to soothe your digestion and promote overall well-being, look no further than a warm cup of ginger and lemon tea. This refreshing beverage has been revered for centuries for its healing properties and has gained a well-deserved reputation as a digestive tonic. It is one of my favorite, easy ways to positively impact digestive health. After discovering this drink I shared the recipe below with my sister and she shared with me that in Kenya this tea is called Dowa, which means 'Medicine' in Swahili, and is often made with honey, lemon, and ginger.

Ginger is a natural digestive aid that has long been prized for its ability to soothe the digestive system. Its active compounds, gingerols and shogaols, possess potent anti-inflammatory properties that can help alleviate discomfort associated with indigestion, nausea, gas and bloating. Additionally, ginger stimulates the production of digestive enzymes, such as protease and lipase, which aid in the breakdown of proteins and fats and help with nutrient absorption, respectively. This improved digestion can lead to better nutrient absorption and reduced instances of gas and bloating.

Lemon, on the other hand, brings a bright and tangy note to the tea. This citrus fruit is a powerhouse of vitamin C and citric acid, both of which play crucial roles in supporting digestion. Lemon aids in the absorption of nutrients and helps flush out toxins, promoting a healthy digestive system.

When combined, ginger and lemon create a synergistic blend that soothes the stomach, aids in digestion, and provides a refreshing and invigorating taste. Whether you're looking to calm occasional discomfort or simply want to incorporate a healthful and delicious beverage into your routine, ginger and lemon tea is an excellent way to start your day.

Ginger and Lemon Ice Cubes for easy Ginger and Lemon tea

One of my favorite ways to enjoy Ginger and Lemon tea is by making Ginger and Lemon ice cubes. This makes it so easy to enjoy this beneficial beverage without having to blend ginger and lemon every day. Lets face it, none of us have time for that!

Ingredients:

  • 1 Whole Ginger Root

  • 4 Peeled Lemons

  • 1/2 cup filtered Water

Instructions:

  1. Blend the ginger and peeled lemons with the water.

  2. Strain this mixture and then pour in a small ice cube tray and freeze.

To prepare ginger and lemon tea, simply add 1-2 of these flavorful ice cubes to a mug and pour hot (but not boiling) water over them. As the cubes melt, they'll release their zingy, invigorating essence, creating a soothing and refreshing tea. I like to add a few drops of stevia to my tea to sweeten it up a little. You can also add a pinch of Redmond’s Real salt for added mineral if you desire.

These convenient ice cubes not only make it easy to enjoy the benefits of ginger and lemon tea, but they also add a delightful twist to your beverage routine.

The Power of Apple Cider Vinegar

While ginger and lemon make a dynamic duo for digestive health, you can take this restorative tea to the next level by adding a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar. This humble pantry staple packs a powerful punch when it comes to promoting overall well-being.

Apple cider vinegar has been shown to have a positive impact on blood sugar regulation. Its acetic acid content has been found to improve insulin sensitivity, which can help regulate blood sugar levels more effectively. This makes apple cider vinegar a valuable addition for those looking to maintain healthy blood sugar levels or to improve insulin sensitivity.

Beyond its effects on blood sugar, apple cider vinegar also offers digestive benefits. The acetic acid in apple cider vinegar helps to break down proteins and fats, allowing for better absorption of nutrients from the foods you consume. Additionally, apple cider vinegar contains beneficial bacteria that can promote a healthy gut microbiome, further supporting optimal digestion.

To incorporate the benefits of apple cider vinegar into your ginger and lemon tea, simply add 1 tablespoon of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar to your mug before pouring in the hot water. The slightly tangy flavor of the vinegar will complement the zesty notes of the ginger and lemon, creating a well-rounded and invigorating beverage.
